The solar energy decision

the practical choice is solar energyNearly all forms of energy we use today to power our vehicles and appliances originate as a form of solar energy. Our indirect fuels of Oil, gas, coal, wood and even hydroelectric resources simply wouldn't exist without the sun. Given any thought at all, most of us realize the foolishness of squandering these valuable, usually irreplaceable, natural resources. Especially so since at the same time we are polluting our air, water, and generally our environment through their increased use. Yet, we continue in our short sightedness to waste the resources given us by the sun rather than going to the source and harnessing the sun's limitless energy directly. Slowly our society has accepted using the sun's abundance; but only when it has been shown to be the most cost effective method. With the rising costs of other choices, the decision for solar is making more economic sense. Unfortunately the federal government ceased providing the income tax incentive for alternative power use that was available throughout the 1970's. A few states do offer some minor incentives, however. For instance in Florida there is no sales tax on these systems a savings of six percent.

There are some practical choices that all of us can take advantage of that absolutely DO make economic sense and offer the added appeal of not perpetuating our current dilemma of wastefulness. Using the sun's power for heating water is a simple direct application - whether for residential hot water, business needs, or for the comfort of a warm swimming pool. It is a proven and easily implemented method of using alternative power. And, although these systems sometimes have a higher initial cost than gas, oil, or electric systems, they are the only choice that rewards their owners with substantial cost savings long after they've paid for themselves; plus give us a sense of "doing our part" by producing a cleaner, healthier, environment.
